Relive the turtle’s journey by taking a looking at our postcard set.
HOW TAT TURTLE SANCTUARY HELPS THE JOURNEY
1. Female turtles will land on the beach at night from as early as 8pm to early morning to lay eggs. The egg laying season in Tioman Island is between April to November.
2. A female turtle will take 2 to 4 hours to complete the egg laying process. It is capable of laying eggs up to 12 times each season. One nest may produce 80 to 120 eggs.
3. Turtle eggs will then be carefully retrieved and put into styrofoam boxes to be incubated in TAT Turtle Sanctuary.
4. The eggs will be incubated into 45cm to 60cm-deep nests on the Teluk Sri Intan beach, where our hatchery is located.
5. These nests have to be fenced to protect the baby turtles from predators.
6. For easy management of the eggs, each nest will be marked with the turtle species, date of laying, the total number of eggs that been incubated and the nest number.
7. After 45 to 65 days of incubation, the turtle eggs will hatch and produce hatchlings.
8. These hatchlings will only be released into the sea either during dawn or dusk to reduce of the danger of predators such as sharks and eagles.
9. It is our hope that the normal turtle life cycle continues when the baby turtles are released back into the sea.
